Finding a love that lasts a lifetime requires the knowledge of how to hang onto that love once you find it. Finding a love that can survive through all of life’s trials takes commitment and hard work. The word commitment is sometimes viewed as a bad word in today’s society. The divorce rate is high and many people are not sticking it out in their relationships.
Just because the going gets tough does not mean the tough should get going. When the refining fire of life comes to a relationship and puts on the heat, the individual character of the partners involved gets magnified and we see who and what we are and what we want out of life.
Not everyone is going to get married but once you find the partner of your dreams that calls for a commitment from the heart that you intend to not leave this person until death. What better way to find a love that has meaning than to tie the knot? I think one major drawback of matrimony is fear. People are afraid that they will fall out of love or that they’ll only be lovers with one person for the rest of life or what if they get tired of each other. I’m definitely not the first person to say this, but all of those things do happen in every marriage.
Once the honeymoon is over and you get home and there are dishes to wash and laundry to do and clothes left in piles on the floor and the toilet seat is left up and financial struggles happen and family fights occur, that’s when you realize that marriage does take work. There are going to be times in your marriage or long-term relationship that you cannot stand your partner. Maybe he or she did something to hurt you or a bad habit just doesn’t stop; whatever it is, you’re going to have times of annoyance with them. It’s a given. There will be times in your marriage or long-term relationship when you just don’t feel that loving feeling anymore. And that’s okay.
It’s okay because falling in love is not the same thing as being in love nor is it the same thing as loving someone. Falling in love is the wonderful time of getting to know your partner during the initial dating stages and you love absolutely everything about him or her and you don’t see any faults. Being in love is the second stage where you know that you are really falling for this person and you don’t want to be without them in your life. You are still on cloud nine, but slowly starting the descent to earth.
Loving someone is a whole different ball game. You know all of this person’s faults and bad habits and they annoy you sometimes, but you love him or her anyway. It’s called unconditional love. In the Greek, it’s labeled as agape love. You have made a commitment in your heart to stand with your partner through thick and thin and you won’t stop. That kind of agape love is a decision. You have to consciously decide everyday that your are committed to the relationship and you will do your part to make it work.
