Roman and Greek Gods and Goddesses?
Why did Romans rename and use the Greek Gods and Goddesses as there own?
Example:
Roman – Bacchus
Greek – Dionysus
They are Both God of Vine but named different
Funny you should give that example! Both Bacchus and Dionysus are Greek. The proper Roman name for the god was Father Liber.
Actually the reason why they have different names, is that the ancient Romans had their own completely different pantheon of gods. But when they came into contact with the Greeks they became so enamoured of Greek literature and myths that they adopted them wholesale into their own culture. Since they already worshipped gods, they simply paired each indigenous Roman god with a Greek one.
BTW, the Roman gods and Greek gods are very well known. But every culture in the ancient world had their own set of gods. There were other pantheons in southern Italy, northern Italy, northern Greece (Thrace), Yugoslavia, etc.
The Greeks matched up all foreign gods with their own, even the Egyptian ones. The Greeks thought Osiris = Dionysus, and Isis = Demeter, for example.
