What is the origin of the English language?
I know there is a lot of German influence in the English language and a lot of French as well.
In fact, a lot of words are the same or very close to the same in German and English.
Also, there are Millions of words in all three languages that come from Latin and Greek. Those Two languages have influenced most of the languages in the world at least a little bit.
There are over 5,000 languages total in the world, but where did English get most of its roots from?
Back in Biblical days, 2000 years ago, English did not exist yet. It has only been around for about 1500 years. It is composed of a ton of different languages.
For example:
Gung Ho– Chinese.
Schnapps– German
Taco– Spanish.
Automobile– Latin
Almost all Dinosaur names– Latin and Greek
Astronomy– Greek
You answered your own question – English comes mostly from German, but also works in a lot of words from other languages as well.
As the British Empire spread around the world, and as new trade routes introduced new commodities to England, new words were coined, or borrowed from other sources.
EDIT: Sorry, KD, French, Spanish and Latin are known as “Romance” languages. Not because their people are great lovers, but because they’re derived from the language of ancient Rome. French and Spanish are NOT derived from Germanic languages.
